George P. Matysek Jr., assistant managing editor


George is a proud graduate of St. Clare Elementary School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Essex. He has a bachelor’s degree in history and writing from Loyola University Maryland and a master’s degree in history from UMBC. George joined The Catholic Review in 1997 as a staff writer, becoming senior writer in 2008 and assistant managing editor in 2012. He currently serves as web editor.

George has won more than 50 national and regional journalism awards from the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association, the Catholic Press Association, the Associated Church Press and National Right to Life. He has reported from Guyana, Guatemala, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. Among those he has interviewed include Justice Antonin Scalia, Martin Sheen, Brooks Robinson, John Harbaugh, Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo, Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., Gov. Martin J. O’Malley, Sister Helen Prejean and Matt Birk.
