Jesuit Father Vincent de Paul Alagia dies at 99

A funeral Mass for Jesuit Father Vincent de Paul Alagia was offered Jan. 29 at the Colombiere Community Chapel in Baltimore. Father Alagia died Jan. 23. He was 99.

Father Alagia was born in Baltimore and attended Loyola Blakefield in Towson before entering the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, Pa., July 28, 1946. He studied philosophy at Woodstock College, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1952. He later returned to Woodstock for theological studies and was ordained to the priesthood there June 22, 1958.

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Father Alagia served as a retreat director at Manresa-on-Severn in Annapolis and led many Marriage Encounter retreats through 1977. He served in pastoral ministry while residing at the St. Claude La Colombière Jesuit Community in Baltimore (2011–16), where he returned in 2025.

Father Alagia, who held a master’s degree in guidance from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., also served in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, the Archdiocese of Washington and Tennessee over the course of his priesthood –- ministering in a variety of roles including teacher, counselor, retreat director and spiritual guide,
