The Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM) has elected Conventual Franciscan Father Michael Heine as its president. CMSM is a pontifically recognized national organization that represents and serves leaders of men’s religious congregations, monastic communities and religious institutes in the United States.
Father Heine, leader of the Our Lady of the Angels Province of his religious community, was elected in August during the CMSM National Assembly in Phoenix, Ariz. He will assume office as president July 22, 2027.
Currently, Father Heine acts as the CMS secretary-treasurer, and he chairs both the finance committee and the formation and vocation committee.
Father Heine called it an honor to be elected to serve the conference, noting that he was proud to be the second Conventual Franciscan elected president. Conventual Franciscan Father Canice Connors served as CMSM president 2001-04.
Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, attended the conference and presented a personal letter from Pope Leo XIV which spoke of community life as a place of sanctification and a source of inspiration.
“I trust that these days of reflection, dialogue and prayer will allow you to discern ways to deepen the fraternal communion both within and among your Institutes,” the pope wrote, “and in this way enable you to continue offering a united, joyful and authentic witness to Christ in the various communities and apostolates where you serve.”
Through the leadership of the religious institutes, monastic communities and societies of apostolic life, CMSM addresses the life and concerns of its members and supports their evangelizing mission in the United States and within the context of the Church and culture in this country.
