The Archdiocese of Baltimore announced March 4 that five of its Catholic schools – Immaculate Conception School (Towson), Our Lady of Perpetual Help School (Ellicott City), St. John the Evangelist School (Severna Park), St. Joseph School (Cockeysville) and St. Mary’s School (Annapolis) – have advanced to the next level of the Blue Ribbon application process.
Each year 50 private schools across the nation can be nominated for the Blue Ribbon award.
“I am extremely proud of our Catholic schools,” said Dr. Donna Hargens, superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. “Qualifying and advancing in the Blue Ribbon application process reinforces the academic excellence and quality Catholic education we provide our students and families in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.”
The National Blue Ribbon Award is the highest honor bestowed upon schools by the United States Department of Education. Established in 1982 by Secretary of Education Terrell H. Bell, it recognizes public and private schools in either or both of the two performance award categories: Exemplary High Performing or Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing. All Catholic schools applying for the 2024 National Blue Ribbon award qualified as exemplary high-performing based on their outstanding academic performance on national and state assessments.
The next step in the application process will involve a review of the selected National Blue Ribbon applications by the Department of Education. The recipients of the 2024 National Blue Ribbon award will be announced in September.
Twenty-five Catholic schools in the archdiocese have received the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award, including 13 within the last 10 years. The complete list of Blue Ribbon schools includes:
