Thirty-nine students were recognized as Knott Scholarship winners during an April 26 pinning ceremony at St. Joseph in Fullerton.
The scholarships are awarded through the Knott Foundation, established in 1977 by Henry and Marion Knott. The foundation later created two scholarship funds for students in the Archdiocese of Baltimore: The Marion Burk Knott Scholarship Fund in 1981 and the Marion I. and Henry J. Knott Scholarship Fund in 1997.
“My parents had a dream to support and nurture Catholic education and, for over 40 years, I am proud to say that we have made that dream come true,” Martin Knott said during the ceremony.
According to Mimie Helm, executive director of Knott Scholarship Funds, this year’s recipients represent 22 different parishes and will attend 19 schools across the archdiocese. She added that the group is one of the largest classes inducted in recent years.
“This will mean more Catholic leaders, bigger events that serve the community and a stronger presence in our archdiocesan schools,” Helm said.
The celebration began with Mass, followed by the pinning ceremony and presentation of certificates. More than 200 guests attended, including School Sister of Notre Dame Patricia McCarron, superintendent of Archdiocese of Baltimore schools, and Greg Farno, chancellor of education for the archdiocese.
“Just seeing the parents and the pride, the gratitude, the unbridled joy of seeing their child recognized,” Farno said afterward. “It is really hard to be a Knott Scholar. It really is special. It is wonderful.”
Farno noted that 2,150 scholarships have been awarded to date.
“The impact it has had on our students, their parents, their schools and our community. I am so grateful to Henry and Marion Knott for all they have done,” Farno said. “Our Catholic schools are so fortunate to be the recipients of their generosity and their foresight. It is really something.”
