St. Ambrose Parish in West Baltimore hosted a community festival Aug. 27-28 that was highlighted by the return of Mass on the Grass.

More than 300 people attended the Mass Sunday under a packed tent and festivities continued afterward with games, food and music. The weekend also featured a free flea market and produce giveaway Saturday, sponsored by the St. Vincent de Paul Society and St. Anthony Closet, as well as youth night activities.

“It was a grand time by all,” said Adrienne Curry, the director of Black Catholic Ministries for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, who was introduced to the community at the event by outgoing director Sherita Thomas.

Pastor Father Paul Zaborowski said the event featured informational sessions with Park West Clinic and that more than 100 people attended the free flea market.

Deacon Robert White of the Archdiocese of Washington was the guest homilist for the event, which was held for the first time in two years. Curry and Thomas address the gathering as well.

The Baltimore Islander Steel Band provided music as well as alumni from Carver High school.

“In the midst of all the negative news and violence in our neighborhood over the past week it was good to see a positive spirit and hopeful event in the community. Light always triumphs over darkness,” Father Zaborowski said.
