NEW YORK (OSV News) – Macho bickering is the order of the day in the moronic ensemble comedy “Super Troopers 3” (Searchlight). Much of the humor — like practically all of the dialogue — moreover, seems to have been fished out of a gutter.
As those unlucky enough to have sat through one or both of the previous movies in the franchise will know, the series follows a group of Vermont state troopers who have curiously immature personalities and far too much time on their hands. As a result, their headquarters comes across as a sort of frat house populated exclusively by manboys.
This time out, the highest ranking member of the squad, Arcot “Thorny” Ramathorn (Jay Chandrasekhar, who also directed), is horrified when his sister, Sarita (Hannah Simone), becomes engaged to Rodney “Rod” Farva (Kevin Heffernan), a colleague he thoroughly detests. So Thorny sets out to sabotage the nuptials.
The boorish antics that follow involve gags about such hilarious topics as power vomiting and anaphylactic shock. There’s even a scene where one of the officers suspects that an elephant is being used as a drug mule and inserts his arm up the animal’s rear end to find out for sure.
More or less in keeping with all this, as written by Broken Lizard — the troupe to which four of the leading cast members belong — the script barrages viewers with such an incessant flood of obscenities that the Green Mountains seem in danger of turning blue.
The film contains debased sexual humor, including a frivolous treatment of adultery, rear nudity, gross scatological comedy, about a dozen instances each of profanity and milder swearing, pervasive rough and crude language, some crass talk and vulgar gestures. The OSV News classification is O — morally offensive. The Motion Picture Association rating is R — restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
