Notre Dame Prep graduate found dead; fellow UVA student charged

Yeardley Love, a 2006 graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson, was found dead in Charlottesville, Va., according to published reports.

A friend and fellow University of Virginia student has been charged with first-degree murder in Love’s case, reports said.

NDP’s community was shocked by the death of Love, 22.

School Sister of Notre Dame Patricia McCarron, headmistress of the school, called Love “a wonderful person,” who was “joyous” and “spirited.”

“Yeardley was an outstanding young lady” Sister Patricia said. “I know we all enjoyed watching her on the lacrosse field and seeing her walk the hallways at NDP. We are proud to call Yeardley ‘one of our girls.’ ”

Love played lacrosse at NDP and Virginia. She also was a standout field hockey player in high school.

George Huguely, a Maryland native and Virginia men’s lacrosse player, was charged in Love’s death.

NDP coach Mary Bartel, who coached Yeardley in lacrosse said, “Yeardley was the core of the personality of the team – she was our laughter, a good soul. She always found an appropriate way to lighten things up.”

Bartel said Love was a friend to everyone.

“I don’t think there is a soul in this (school) building who couldn’t say her name without smiling,” Bartel said. “Yeardley loved NDP and NDP loved her. She was a good soul and an outstanding athlete.”
