Maryland Soccer Hall of Famer Steve Powers will join Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson as athletic director in July.
Powers comes to NDP from Sandy Spring Friends School in Montgomery County, where he has led the school’s athletics program for 23 years.
“Steve brings to NDP a wealth of experience as a player, coach and administrator and both he and his teams have a track record of extraordinary success at the professional, collegiate and high school levels,” said School Sister of Notre Dame Patricia McCarron, NDP’s headmistress. “He is well qualified to oversee the growth and success of NDP’s sports program and to help our student-athletes realize the fullness of their God-given potential.”
At Notre Dame, Powers will lead an athletic program that fields multiple teams in all 15 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland-sponsored sports, including badminton, basketball, crew, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, indoor soccer, indoor track, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball, as well as ultimate frisbee.
He also will oversee intramurals, athletic facility rentals, and a sports camp program. Approximately 50 percent of NDP high school students participate in interscholastic athletics. Recent championships have included swimming, indoor track and field, tennis, field hockey, and lacrosse. In the middle school, nearly all students participate in one of 10 sports in interscholastic competition.

I can’t wait to get started and look forward to meeting everyone in the weeks and months ahead.”
At Sandy Spring, Powers oversaw the comprehensive athletic program for the coed, K-12 day and boarding school, including the fielding of 12 teams for 350 student athletes. During his time, he built programs that resulted in 56 championship-winning teams, as well as established new softball, wrestling, hockey, swimming, competitive climbing and intramural programs. Twice he was named Athletic Director of the Year by the Maryland State Athletic Directors Association (2008–09 and 2014–15) and Coach of the Year by Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (1997 and 1999). He also served as the President of the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference.
Inducted into the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012, the former Maryland Bays goalkeeper holds the national outdoor professional soccer record of 17 consecutive wins in goal 1990-91. In 1990, Powers also earned the most valuable player at both the North American Cup Championship and the American Professional Soccer League Championship.
After eight years of professional competition, he began coaching at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville and as an assistant at the University of Maryland, his undergraduate alma mater. He joined Sandy Spring in 1999.
Founded in 1873, Notre Dame Preparatory School is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school for approximately 800 girls in grades six through 12.
