Golf truly is a sport that can be played for a lifetime, and if you are like Bob Plummer it’s never too late to start.
Plummer, 87, is a former parishioner of St. Rose of Lima in Brooklyn Park and a retired manager at Verizon. He didn’t pick up a club until he was 80 and now enjoys playing twice a month from April to October with the golf group at Charlestown Senior Living in Catonsville.
“It’s so much fun and it gets us off the reservation,” joked Plummer, who regularly joins 11 others from his community for nine holes at Forest Park Golf Course in Baltimore. “It’s a great way to get out, enjoy the outdoors and socialize.
“If you can swing a club, you can play with us,” said Plummer, who said he was an avid hunter and fisherman in his younger years. “It’s a great way to have a good time and be in the outdoors.”
Baltimore area courses and clubs offer dozens of opportunities for seniors.
Baltimore Classic Five, which encompasses the five public courses owned by Baltimore City, offers a number of senior leagues, including the Pine Ridge Men’s Senior Club and the Mount Pleasant Senior Men’s Club.
Baltimore County Golf, which also includes five public courses, has senior leagues at its Fox Hollow, Diamond Ridge, Greystone and Rocky Point courses.
Most other surrounding county public courses and private courses also host senior leagues and have senior rates available for those who prefer to play or schedule an outing on their own. In addition, Free State Seniors Golf Association offers golfers an opportunity to join forces for competition.
Plummer says his group isn’t concerned about competition in Charlestown’s co-ed group that ranges in age from early 70s to upper 80s.
“There’s no competition,” he said. “We just enjoy getting outside and each other’s company.”
