Sulpician Father Daniel F. Moore was elected provincial superior of his religious society at a meeting in Baltimore May 19.
Gathering at the Center for Continuing Formation of St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Roland Park, the Provincial Assembly of the Sulpician Province of the USA elected Father Moore to a six-year term. The assembly, delayed since 2020 because of the pandemic, also elected the members of the Provincial Council.
Father Moore, a native of Memphis and a 1984 graduate of St. Mary’s Seminary, was serving as acting provincial after the death of Sulpician Father John C. Kemper in May 2020.
Father Moore is a priest of the Diocese of Memphis. He entered the Society of the Priests of Saint Sulpice July 1, 2000, after serving 16 years as a diocesan priest — notably as a president/principal of a diocesan high school and middle school, a pastor, secretary to presbyteral council and member of the college of diocesan consultors. He is also an alumnus of the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome), earning his doctorate at the university in February 2006.
Father Moore served as the Sulpician director of discernment and admission from 2009 to 2018 and the director of communications from 2012 to 2016. He also served as the provincial secretary of the U.S. province from 2011-2017.
In the fall of 2017, he rejoined the formation and academic faculty at St. Mary’s, lecturing in systematic theology. In August of 2019, he was appointed vice president of strategic initiatives. He also serves as one of the honorary chairs of the St. Mary’s Campaign Executive Committee and 21st Century Capital Campaign.
Father Moore was elected to the Provincial Council in 2009 as first consultor, serving two consecutive terms, 2009-2015 and 2015-2020.
The Sulpicians are a society of diocesan priests dedicated to the formation and education of priests and future priests. In 1791 in Baltimore, the Sulpicians founded St. Mary’s, the first Catholic seminary in the United States. The province staffs seminaries and continuing formation programs for the clergy in the archdioceses of Baltimore; San Antonio; Washington, D.C.; Zambia; Central Africa and Malawi. In addition, Sulpicians minister in other forums throughout the United States and Zambia.
