The Maryland Catholic Conference’s usual day for citizens to advocate at the state Legislature will again be done virtually for 2022, due to coronavirus restrictions. A new option this year is for constituents to send a brief video message to a legislator.
Catholic Advocacy Day will be held Feb. 16, with parishioners able to participate in two ways: by signing up for the statewide Catholic Advocacy Network at mdcatholic.org/joincan or by visiting the Catholic Advocacy Day webpage, mdcatholic.org/advocacyday, on Feb. 16.
The Maryland Catholic Conference is the public policy arm of the bishops and dioceses serving the state – the archdioceses of Baltimore and Washington and the Diocese of Wilmington, Del.
CAN members will receive action alerts for Advocacy Day via email or text. The alerts also will be posted on the Advocacy Day website, along with a virtual briefing room that provides background information on the issues, which are expected to include one each from the three major areas in which the MCC advocates: education, children and families; respect for life; and social and economic justice.
Once a person clicks on an alert, he or she will be able to choose whether to email, call or prepare a video message of up to 30 seconds for his or her legislators, advocating for the issue. “We are excited to be able to offer a new way for Catholics to advocate with their elected representatives on behalf of our church, our schools and the vulnerable people we serve,” said Jenny Kraska, MCC executive director.
