Brother Charles Raymond Madden, O.F.M., Conv., dies at 83

A funeral Mass for Conventual Franciscan Brother Charles Raymond Madden was offered Jan. 19 at the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe in Libertyville, Ill. Brother Charles died Jan. 13. He was 83.

Brother Raymond was born in Baltimore and graduated from Mount St. Joseph High School in 1957. He worked for 10 years at the Social Security headquarters in Baltimore, but felt called to the religious life. He entered the Conventual Franciscan Novitiate in Lake Forest, Ill, in 1969. He professed his solemn vows in 1973 and then spent the entirety of his religious life at the friars’ National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe, first in Kenosha, Wis., and then in “Marytown,” Libertyville, Ill, where the shrine relocated in the late 1970s.

Brother Charles was the unofficial historian of Marytown and wrote several articles and books. He was devoted to eucharistic adoration and beginning Aug. 14, 1975, he prayed a Holy Hour every night at 11 p.m. in front of the Blessed Sacrament.
