Brother Michael J. Gavin, S.M., dies at 81

A funeral Mass for Marianist Brother Michael John Galvin was offered Jan. 9 at the Assumption Chapel at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Brother Michael died Jan. 1. He was 81 and had spent 63 years in religious life.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Brother Michael held a bachelor’s degree in French from the University of Dayton, where he also completed summer programs at Mineola Language Institute in New York and the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. He was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, undergoing graduate studies in romance languages and linguistics at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Brother Michael taught at The Cardinal Gibbons High School in Baltimore in the 1960s. He professed his perpetual vows as a Marianist brother in Baltimore on Aug. 20, 1966.

Elsewhere, Brother Michael served in Florida, Missouri, Puerto Rico, Massachusetts and Texas.
