An 11 a.m. funeral Mass for Daughter of Charity Sister Maria Gnerro will be offered March 27 at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. Sister Maria died Feb. 19. She was 92.
Born in Washington, D.C., Sister Maria (formerly Dolores Assunta), entered religious life in 1950. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history and French in 1966 from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg and a master’s degree in American History in 1974 from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Early in her ministry, Sister Maria taught at St. Dominic School in Baltimore and St. Charles Borromeo School in Pikesville. In 1992, Sister Maria was missioned to Emmitsburg where she worked in the Seton Shrine Gift Shop and the Seton Day Care Center. In 2003, she went to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore to be a patient advocate. In 2010, Sister Maria came to Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg for a ministry of prayer.
Elsewhere, she served in Virginia, New York, South Carolina and the Archdiocese of Washington.
