Sister Agnes Borkowski, OSF, who taught at home parish in Essex, dies at 93

Sister Agnes Borkowski, a Baltimore native and professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 72 years, died May 25 at University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. She was 93, and ministered primarily in child care, elementary education and health care.

A viewing for Sister Agnes will be held June 2, 9:45-10:30 a.m., at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Baynesville, with a funeral Mass to follow.

Sister Agnes was born in Baltimore and raised at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Essex. She professed her first vows in 1949, and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Neumann University in Aston, Pa. In 1982, she returned to the Archdiocese of Baltimore to teach at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, and then St. Elizabeth of Hungary School in Highlandtown. In 1988 she began ministering at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, where she served in various support and volunteer roles for many years. She also volunteered at the Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Sister Agnes also ministered for five years in the Diocese of Trenton, N.J.; four in the Diocese of Allentown, Pa.; 19 in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia; and four in the Diocese of Fall River, Mass.
