Sister Doris Johnson, former teacher at Little Flower and St. Elizabeth, dies at 84

An 11 a.m. funeral Mass for Franciscan Sister Doris Johnson (formerly Sister Joseph Marian) will be offered April 15 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. Sister Doris died April 9. She was 84 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 64 years.

The Philadelphia native ministered primarily in education and social services and was active in peace and justice work. Sister Doris’ work in education began in the Archdiocese of Baltimore where she taught for seven years at Shrine of the Little Flower School and St. Elizabeth School.

After entering the congregation in 1958 and professing her first vows in 196, she earned degrees in education and social work from Neumann University (then Our Lady of Angels College), Temple University and Rutgers University.  

Her teaching ministry also featured stints in Delaware and Florida. 

Sister Doris later ministered for 39 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, serving as a drug and alcohol counselor. 

In the early 1990s, she began serving her congregation as director of pastoral services, attending to the sisters for 19 years. She later served as a volunteer and driver.  In 2021, Sister Doris moved to Assisi House, the congregation’s retirement residence in Aston, where she served in prayer and hospitality ministry until her death.
