Sister Elizabeth Ellen Kane, O.S.F., dies at 81

A funeral Mass for Franciscan Sister Elizabeth “Betty” Ellen Kane (formerly Sister Paul Anthony) will be offered at 11 a.m. on March 23 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. Sister Betty died March 17. She was 81 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 61 years. 

Born in Baltimore, Sister Betty was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Highlandtown and a graduate of The Catholic High School of Baltimore. She entered the congregation in 1959 and professed her first vows in 1962. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Neumann University (then Our Lady of Angels College) in Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in liturgical studies from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. 

Sister Betty ministered for 26 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. She taught at Immaculate Conception School and served as local minister at what is now University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, both in Towson. She also served as the congregational vocation director for the Southern Province and as a pastoral associate at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Essex.

Elsewhere, Sister Betty served in Pennsylvania, Delaware and the Archdiocese of Washington.
