Sister Hildegarde Grogan, O.S.F., ministered in archdiocese, dies at 87

Sister Hildegarde Grogan, a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 64 years, whose ministry in health care and education brought her to the Archdiocese of Baltimore, died Jan. 20 in Assisi House in Aston, Pa. She was 87.

A Philadelphia native, Sister Hildegarde earned her nursing degree from St. Joseph Hospital in Towson, a bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and her master’s degree in medical/surgical nursing from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Sister Hildegarde ministered for 34 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, including 24 years as a professor at Neumann University in Aston; 15 years in the Diocese of Wilmington; and five years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, where she taught at Immaculate Conception School in Towson and served as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital.

A funeral Mass was offered at Assisi House Jan. 26.
