Sister Margaret Mary Lewis, O.S.F., dies at 92

A funeral Mass for Franciscan Sister Margaret Mary Lewis was offered Jan. 6 in Aston, Pa. Sister Margaret Mary died Dec. 31. She was 92 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 72 years.

Sister Margaret (formerly Sister John Therese) was born in Philadelphia and entered the congregation in 1946, professing her first vows in 1949.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in science from Villanova, a master’s degree in education from Trenton State College, and a doctorate in medical technology from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.  She ministered primarily in health care and administration.

During her 16 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Sister Margaret worked at what is now University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson; Shrine of the Little Flower School in Baltimore and The Catholic High School of Baltimore.  She also served in local house ministry at Cromwell Valley and at the Cancer Institute, both in Towson.

Elsewhere, she served in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and Delaware.

Sister Margaret Lewis authored several professional journal articles and a textbook on clinical parasitology, served on many boards, and was the recipient of several prestigious awards.
