Sister Mary Charia Ripple, S.S.N.D., former principal, dies at 96

A funeral Mass for School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Charia Ripple was offered Jan. 26 at Villa Assumpta in Towson. Sister Mary Charia died Jan. 20. She was 96.

Born in Baltimore, Catherine Ripple was introduced to the School Sisters of Notre Dame at Blessed Sacrament School in Baltimore. She entered the religious community after graduating from the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore, and was given the religious name Mary Charia. She professed her first vows in 1948.

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Sister Mary Charia served as a teacher at St. Mary School in Hagerstown (1963-64), a teacher at St. Ambrose School in Baltimore (1964-65), an administrator of special education at St. Ann School in Baltimore (1965-72), an administrator of special education for the Archdiocese of Baltimore (1970-72), principal of St. Jane Frances School in Riviera Beach (1972-76) and a teacher at St. Augustine School in Elkridge (1976-77). She also ministered in Florida.

Sister Mary Charia, who retired in 2000, held a bachelor’s degree from what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University and a master’s degree from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Mo.
