Sister Mary Patricia Cummings, taught at Ascension school in 1950s, dies at 96

Sister Mary Patricia Cummings, a Sister of Providence who taught at then-Ascension Catholic School in Halethorpe in the 1950s, died on Apr. 12 in Mother Theodore Hall in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. She was 96.

Born in Indiana in 1925, Mary Patricia Cummings entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1942 and professed her final vows in 1949. For 32 years, she taught at schools in Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Washington, D.C. She served several years as a principal.

Later, Sister Mary would serve as a pastoral associate in parishes in Indiana and Illinois.

“Sister Mary Pat was a woman with a deep commitment to principle.  She worked hard, giving wholehearted service in every ministry,” an obituary from her order read.

 A private funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on April 22 in Indiana.
