A funeral Mass for School Sister of Notre Dame Sarah Thomas “Sally” Neale was offered Aug. 27 at Villa Assumpta in Towson. Sister Sally died Aug. 17. She was 87.
Born in Baltimore, Sister Sally attended elementary and high school at Notre Dame Preparatory School. She was received by the School Sisters of Notre Dame as a novice and was given the religious name Sister Mary Erneste in 1954.
In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Sister Sally taught at St. Jane Frances de Chantal School in Riviera Beach (1964-69), St. John Regional School in Frederick (1969-70) and Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson (1975-76). She worked in the communications department of what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore from 1976 to 1978 while also ministering in public relations and admissions for the Baltimore Province of her religious community.
Sister Sally served on the staff of the Baltimore County Health Department from 1978 to 1979. She was a nurse at Union Memorial Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital, both in Baltimore (1981-83). She later served as nurse for Health America, in private practice and at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.
Elsewhere, Sister Sally ministered in New York, South Carolina, Washington, D.C., Minnesota, Illinois, Tennessee and Kentucky.
Sister Sally held a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame of Maryland University, a nursing degree from the Johnston School of Nursing, Baltimore, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Notre Dame of Maryland University and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
