Sulpician Father Louis Reitz dies at 93

A funeral Mass for Sulpician Father Louis M. Reitz will be offered at 11 a.m. on April 5 at Our Lady of the Angels in Catonsville. Father Reitz died March 27. He was 93.

Father Reitz was born in Baltimore and attended St. Charles Seminary College and High School, Catonsville. He continued his seminary education in philosophy at St Mary’s Seminary, Paca Street, in Baltimore. He completed his theological studies at St Mary’s Seminary, Roland Park. Father Reitz was ordained for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1955 and immediately joined the Society of St. Sulpice.

Father Reitz continued his graduate studies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., earning a master’s degree in library science in 1959. He earned a master’s degree in education at what is now Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore in 1960.

He served on the faculties of St. Thomas Seminary, Louisville, Ky., St. Mary’s Seminary & University, Roland Park, and St. Mary’s Seminary, Liberal Arts College, in Catonsville.

From 1979 to 2000, he served as provincial treasurer for the Sulpician Fathers in the United States. He was also a chaplain to the Baltimore Fire Department and an active member of the United States Power Squadron, a nonprofit all-volunteer national boating fraternity dedicated to promoting safe boating by educating the public and providing advanced education to its members.

For 38 years he assisted at St. Pius X in Rodgers Forge. He took up residence at the Sulpician retirement community of Villa Olier in Catonsville in 2016.
