Carmelite Sister Mary Eileen McNamara dies at 104 April 11, 2024By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Local News, News, Obituaries A funeral Mass for Carmelite Sister Mary Eileen McNamara (formerly known as Sister Gertrude of the Blessed Trinity) was offered March 16 at the Carmelite Monastery in Towson. Sister Mary Eileen died Feb. 23. She was 104. Raised in Washington, D.C., Sister Mary Eileen entered the Carmelite Monastery in downtown Baltimore in 1941, professing her final vows four years later. She relocated to the Towson monastery in 1961, when her religious community made the transition from the city to Dulaney Valley Road. She had been involved in helping to plan and coordinate the relocation. In addition to her contemplative prayer life in the cloister, Sister Mary Eileen visited women at the Jessup prison and was involved in interfaith organizations. She was known for writing reflections on Carmelite saints such as St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. Also see Father Walter J.
