The annual "Tribute in Light" illuminates the sky over New York's lower Manhattan skyline Sept. 10, 2019, the eve of the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Each year to mark the anniversary of events that brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center, two beams of light are illuminated in the sky, from dusk to dawn. Nearly 3,000 people perished in New York, Washington and Shanksville, Pa., in the 2001 attacks. (CNS photo/Andrew Kelly, Reuters)

Archbishop Lori to offer special Mass commemorating 25th anniversary of 9/11 attacks

Archbishop William E. Lori will offer the 12:10 p.m. Mass Sept. 11 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa.

In his September column in the Catholic Review, Archbishop Lori reflected on the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, recalling the grief of those affected in his Diocese of Bridgeport and the pastoral response that followed. He honored the courage and sacrifice of first responders and urged Americans to preserve the tragedy in the nation’s collective memory, echoing Pope John Paul II’s call for truth, justice, freedom and peace in the face of terrorism.

“To truly honor those we lost and the legendary courage of our first responders,” Archbishop Lori said, “we must never forget. Let no one believe that terrorism or violence can ever resolve injustice. Instead, let each of us ask whether we are actively fostering a more peaceful world or fueling division within our own spheres of influence.”
