The Archdiocese of Baltimore announced it has relaunched its Medals of Honor program.

The redesigned program aligns with Archbishop William E. Lori’s pastoral letter “A Light Brightly Visible” as well as with the five core pillars of the archdiocese’s mission statement: Evangelization, Liturgy, Education, Service and Stewardship.

The awards will be conferred at the archdiocesan gala April 22.

The Medals of Honor recognize lay and religious individuals who have demonstrated a willingness to go above and beyond through the course of their work. Each will be honored for their dedication, passion and outstanding contributions in one of five specific categories.

“There are inspiring acts of service and sacrifice happening every day across the archdiocese, and these Medals of Honor shine a light on ordinary people who do extraordinary things to share Christ’s love,” Archbishop Lori said. “We hope that by uplifting the honorees, many others will be moved and inspired to let their light shine.”

The public can honor lay or religious leaders they respect and whose good work has made a difference within the Archdiocese of Baltimore by nominating them for a Medal of Honor award. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 17.

The awards nomination categories include:

  • The Evangelization/Liturgy Award is presented to a pastor who exemplifies what it means to build a vibrant faith community and help others find and share their light.
  • The Evangelization Award recognizes a layperson or religious individual who has significantly impacted the work of evangelization.
  • The Education Award recognizes an individual who has shown outstanding leadership in the ministry of Catholic education.
  • The Service Award is given to an individual who has stood in solidarity with underserved and underrepresented communities of faith.
  • The Catholic Social Ministry Award is awarded to a layperson or religious who exemplifies innovation and entrepreneurship in Catholic social ministries.
  • The Stewardship Award recognizes an individual or couple whose “sincere and generous charity” bears witness to Christ.

Other criteria for the Archdiocese Medal of Honor include the following:

  • The nominee must be a Catholic in good standing.
  • The nominee must have an enduring and/or significant contribution of time, talent, and/or treasure to the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
  • Nominees must have evidenced leadership qualities through their commitment to the church and its mission.
