Franciscan Sister Joan Bunty dies at 88 April 3, 2024By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Feature, Local News, News, Obituaries An 11 a.m. funeral Mass for Franciscan Sister Joan Bunty, (formerly Sister Josephine Mary) will be offered April 4 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. Sister Joan died March 31. She was 88 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 68 years. Sister Joan was born in Baltimore, where she was a member of St. Anthony Parish and a graduate of The Catholic High School of Baltimore. She entered the congregation in 1954 and professed her first vows in 1956. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Neumann University (then Our Lady of Angels College) in Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in religious studies from Marywood College in Scranton. Sister Joan ministered for 44 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, serving for six years as the director of campus ministry at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg and for seven years as director of religious education at Ss. Philip and James Church in Homewood. For 26 years, she served as a pastoral associate of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Crofton and at St. Gabriel in Woodlawn. She spent an additional five years in pastoral care at St. Elizabeth Rehab and Nursing Center in Baltimore. She also ministered in Pennsylvania.
