A funeral Mass for Daughter of Charity Sister Regina Russell was offered Aug. 24 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg. Sister Regina died Aug. 20 at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. She was 98, and had spent 77 years as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

A Baltimore native, she was a 1937 graduate of Seton High School. She entered her community in 1938 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg in 1965.

She served as a child care worker in Delaware and New York, and then entered teaching, a ministry that included schools in Virginia, North Carolina, New York, and, from 1961 to 1966, Our Lady of Lourdes School in Baltimore, and from 1980 to 1985, Mother Seton School, Emmitsburg. An obituary provided by her order noted that when asked about teaching, Sister Regina shared, “it was with deep satisfaction that I observed young children discover the glories of reading!”

She also served as a docent at the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg, 1985-1997, and at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, 1997-2002.
