2022-23 Distinctive Scholars announced April 3, 2023By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Feature, Local News, News, Schools The Archdiocese of Baltimore honored the academic excellence of three seniors from each of the 18 Catholic high schools within the Archdiocese of Baltimore during the 31st annual Distinctive Scholars Convocation, held March 30 at Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn. In a message to the Distinctive Scholars, Superintendent of Catholic Schools Donna Hargens said the scholars had nurtured their “God-given gifts in service to the mission of Jesus Christ.” “You have demonstrated an integration of your faith, learning, commitment to growth and passion for helping others,” Hargens said. “You have grown as an individual, and have contributed to the growth of your entire school community.” Hargens added that the scholars have “embraced service as an opportunity to share your love of God with others and to apply your faith in your work and in your relationships.” Joseph Hayburn, a senior at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis who broke Michael Phelps’ decades old 100-meter backstroke record for the Loyola University of Maryland swimming pool, was named a Distinctive Scholar by the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
