Key moments in the LIFE OF ARCHBISHOP WILLIAM E. LORI

1951

Childhood

Archbishop William E. Lori is born in Louisville, Ky, and raised in Indiana.

1973

Formation

Enters Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Emmitsburgy, to become a priest for the Archdiocese of Washington

1977

Ordained to the priesthood by Washington Cardinal William Baum, who assigns him as associate pastor of St. Joseph in Landover.

1982

Earns a doctorate in sacred theology from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

1983

Named priest-secretary and theologian to Washington Cardinal James Hickey

1994

Appointed chancellor, vicar general and moderator of the curia for the Archdiocese of Washington.

1995

Ordained an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington.

2001

Installed as the fourth bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport, Conn.

2002

Named to U.S. bishop’s Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual Abuse; helps create Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.

2005

Named 10th Supreme Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus.

2011

Appointed chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty

2012

Installed May 16 as the 16th archbishop of Baltimore

2012

Pope Benedict XVI presents Archbishop Lori the pallium, a garment worn around the neck and signifying his office as the metropolitan archbishop of the Province of Baltimore

2014

Files a federal lawsuit on behalf of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and Catholic Review Media as part of an effort to stop a Health and Human Services mandate under the Affordable Care Act that would require health insurance coverage for contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs

Celebrates the 225th anniversary of the founding of the Archdiocese of Baltimore with a special Mass at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland

2015

Works to promote peace and justice in wake of Freddie Gray unrest in Baltimore. A year later, he leads an interfaith spiritual pilgrimage to Rome to receive a blessing from Pope Francis for the interfaith and ecumenical work in the city

Publishes a book, “The Joy of Believing,” to help readers discover the joy that comes from walking with Jesus and living the faith.

2016

Releases first pastoral letter in Baltimore, “A Light Brightly Visible: Lighting a Path to Missionary Discipleship”

2017

Addresses questions of religious freedom in a series of events in Saint-Omer, France, as the town officially reopened its newly renovated historic Chapel of the Jesuits, where the first bishop of Baltimore, Archbishop John Carroll, attended school in the mid-1700s

2018

Releases “The Enduring Power of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Principles of Nonviolence: A Pastoral Reflection” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the civil rights leader.

2019

Releases “The Journey to Racial Justice: Repentance, Healing and Action,” acknowledging sins of racism within the church in the past and present, and suggesting concrete measures to combat racism and promote racial justice.

2020

Appoints Journey to Racial Justice Work Group, which later recommends formation of Journey to Racial Justice Coordinating Council.

2021

Releases his second pastoral letter, “A Light Brightly Visible 2.0,” to update the vision for parish ministry.

Names Auxiliary Bishop Bruce A. Lewandowski, C.Ss.R. to lead the Journey to Racial Justice Coordinating Council and help implement recommendations for fighting racism within and beyond the archdiocese.

Blesses and dedicates Mother Mary Lange Catholic School, the first new Catholic school to be built in Baltimore City in 60 years.

Becomes chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities.
