A funeral Mass for Sister of Mercy Mary Ellen Brodie (formerly known as Sister Martin Marie) was offered Sept. 4 at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Baynesville. Sister Mary Ellen died Aug. 25. She was 91 and had been a Sister of Mercy for 72 years.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., she entered religious life in 1952 at the Sisters of Mercy’s novitiate in Mount Washington. She professed her final vows in 1957.

Sister Mary Ellen earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Mount St. Agnes College in Baltimore and a master’s degree in education from what is now Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. She taught at St. Peter’s Elementary School in Baltimore and was a teacher of 33 years at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Baynesville. After retiring from full time ministry, Sister Mary Ellen continued working as a volunteer with children at Immaculate Heart of Mary and also spent many volunteer hours at The Villa in Baltimore, providing comfort and company for the elderly sisters there.
