A funeral Mass for Redemptorist Father Andrew W. Carr was offered Dec. 11 at Sacred Heart of Jesus-Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Highlandtown. Father Carr, whose last assignment was at Sacred Heart of Jesus, died Dec. 7 at the St. John Neumann Community at Stella Maris in Timonium. He was 94.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., Father Carr was the brother of late Redemptorist Father William E. Carr, who died in 1989.

Father Carr professed his temporary vows as a Redemptorist in 1950 at St. Mary in Ilchester and made his second novitiate at St. Mary in Annapolis, 1956-57. He professed perpetual vows in 1953 and was ordained a priest in 1955 at Mount St. Alphonsus Seminary in Esopus, N.Y.

Starting in 1994, Father Carr served as associate pastor at St. Michael the Archangel and St. Patrick in Fells Point  before later serving at Sacred Heart of Jesus-Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Throughout his active ministry in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Father Carr served both the Spanish-speaking and English-speaking communities before retiring in 2012.

Early in his priesthood, Father Carr was a missionary for 27 years to the Vice-Provinces of Campo Grande, Brazil, and Asunción, Paraguay. In his ministry in South America, Father Carr was active in the Catholic charismatic renewal, particularly “Life in the Spirit” seminars. He was a frequent charismatic retreat director for priests, sisters, seminarians, confirmation groups and those involved in Marriage Encounter.

Father Carr also served in New York City, Texas and Philadelphia. In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, he assisted with the charismatic renewal group at Sacred Heart in Glyndon.

In a 2005 interview with The Catholic Review, which acknowledged his 50th jubilee of ordination, Father Carr said, “I’m just a very happy priest, I make no bones about it. I have a lot of experience in counseling, and seeing the cooperation and the love of the people you’re serving. Who could not be happy?”

Father Carr was laid to rest Dec. 15 at Mount St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Esopus, N.Y., the same cemetery where his brother is buried.
