School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Michael Tashiro, former NDP teacher, dies at 93 September 12, 2025By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Local News, News, Obituaries A funeral Mass will be offered Sept. 17 for School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Michael Tashiro at Villa Assumpta in Towson. Sister Mary Michael, a former teacher at Notre Dame Preparatory School in Towson, died Aug. 28. She was 93. She died on the 63rd anniversary of the profession of her final SSND vows. She taught foreign languages at NDP from 1997 to 2015 before beginning a mission at Villa Assumpta and Stella Maris in Timonium. Agnes (Ume) Tashiro, a Tokyo native, entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame from her parish in the Shishigatani district of Kyoto, Japan, in 1954. She professed first vows on April 8, 1957, with her final profession taking place on Aug. 28, 1962. For the first eight years of her ministry, she taught at Notre Dame Junior and Senior High School in Kyoto, Japan. In 1953, she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Education from the University of the Sacred Heart. After her initial years teaching, she came to America to earn her master’s degree in library science from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1964. In addition to teaching in Japan and Maryland, she served in China.
