Born in Baltimore, Jean Marie Neumann attended St. Bernardine School and Mount St. Agnes High School in Baltimore. After graduating from high school, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1947 in Mount Washington and received her religious name. She made her perpetual vows in 1953.

Sister Agnese taught at St. Bernard School in Baltimore (1950-51) and Mercy High School in Baltimore (1960-67 and 1969-73).
