Sister Catherine died Jan. 3. She was 86. Born Joan Catherine Horan in Miami Beach, Fla., she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1957, making first vows in 1960 and perpetual vows in 1965. Sister Catherine earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Trinity College, a master’s degree in mathematics from The Catholic University of America and a master’s degree in business administration from what is now Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. A former teacher at Trinity School in Ilchester, she also served in the Archdiocese of Washington and Kenya, where she worked with children with disabilities and helped people start small businesses.
