Sister Elaine Spangler, former nursing supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital, dies at 90 December 6, 2024By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Local News, News, Obituaries A funeral Mass was offered Dec. 6 in Aston, Pa., for Sister Elaine Spangler, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 65 years, who died Nov. 30. The former Sister Carlos Marie was 90. Sister Elaine was born in Harrisburg, Pa., and entered religious life in 1957. She professed her first vows in 1959 and earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Delaware. She ministered primarily in health care and parish ministry, including serving as assistant nursing supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital in Towson (now University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center). She was a parish nurse at St. Mary of the Assumption, Blessed Sacrament and St. Matthew parishes in Baltimore. Elsewhere, Sister Elaine served in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
