Sister Joan Matthews dies at 93 May 17, 2022By Catholic Review Staff Catholic News Service Filed Under: Local News, News, Obituaries A funeral Mass for Sister Joan Matthews of the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence will be offered May 24 in Indiana. Sister Joan, formerly known as Sister Ignatius, died April 25. She was 93 and had spent 75 years as a Sister of Providence. Born in Washington, D.C., Sister Joan served in the Archdiocese of Baltimore at Church of the Ascension, Halethorpe, 1959-62. Elsewhere, she ministered in Illinois, Indiana, Washington DC, California, Massachusetts, Taiwan and the Archdiocese of Washington. She held a bachelor’s degree in music from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana and a master’s degree in voice from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
