Sister Marie Olwell dies at 96 July 30, 2026By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Local News, News, Obituaries A funeral Mass for Sister Marie Olwell (formerly Sister Anita Bernadette) of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill will be offered Sept. 21 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Villa in Flourtown, Pa. Sister Marie died June 16. She was 96. The New Jersey native entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill in 1947 and professed her final vows in 1955. She held a bachelor’s degree in music from Chestnut Hill College and a master’s degree in education from what is now Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore in 1975. She earned a doctorate in ministry from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1993. Sister Marie taught at All Saint School in Liberty Heights from 1959 to 1972. Elsewhere, she ministered in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
