Sister Mary Kathleen Marie Saffa dies at 86

A funeral Mass for Daughter of Charity Sister Kathleen Marie (Marie Kathleen) Saffa was offered March 9 at the Villa St. Michael Chapel in Emmitsburg. Sister Kathleen Marie died March 6. She was 86.

Born in Baltimore, Sister Kathleen was a parishioner of St. Dominic in Baltimore. After two years at Seton High School in Baltimore, she left to help her family before entering the Daughters of Charity in 1955 and completing her high school education at St. Joseph High School in Emmitsburg.

Sister Kathleen earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg and a master’s degree in religious studies from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary-Overbrook in Philadelphia.

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Sister Kathleen Marie served in formation for her religious community at St. Joseph Provincial House (1970-71) and in education at St. Dominic School in Baltimore (1978-84). She was pastoral care director at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland (1984-86), pastoral care director at St. Elizabeth Home for Nursing Care in Baltimore (1995-99), pastoral care coordinator at St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Center in Frostburg (1999-2005), and assistant to the servant sister at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg (2005-08). In 2014, Sister Kathleen Marie was missioned to Villa St. Michael where she served in the ministry of prayer until her death.

Elsewhere, Sister Kathleen Marie ministered in Virginia, Ohio, the Archdiocese of Washington, Georgia and Florida.
