A funeral Mass for School Sister of Notre Dame Miriam (Miriam Victor) Jansen was offered July 23 in St. Louis, Mo. Sister Miriam died June 25. She was 86.

Born in St. Louis, Sister Miriam (given the name Irene) was a twin sister – both of whom were cared for in a Catholic orphanage in Illinois for nine months until they were adopted.

Sister Miriam was received into the novitiate for the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1958 and was given the religious name Miriam Victor in memory of her father. She professed final vows on July 30, 1965.

Beginning in 1992, Sister Miriam served for 19 years as director of international programs at what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore. A former provincial leader for her religious community’s former St. Louis Province and a former superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Jefferson City, Miss., she held other assignments in Missouri and Illinois.

Sister Miriam held a bachelor’s degree in speech from the former Notre Dame College in St. Louis; a master’s degree in education from Ball State University in Indiana; and a master’s degree focusing on global/international education from Harvard University in Massachusetts in 1989.
