A funeral Mass for Bon Secours Sister Margaret “Peggy” Mathewson will be offered April 19 at the Sisters of Bon Secours Chapel at the Bon Secours Retreat and Conference Center in Marriottsville. Sister Peggy died April 14. She was 82.

Sister Peggy was a registered nurse and held nursing and supervisory positions at Bon Secours facilities in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Michigan and Virginia. She established a clinic in Baltimore to assist people with Medicaid or without insurance.

The native of Woodlyn, Pa., entered the Bon Secours community in 1960 and professed her vows in 1968.

After attending the University of Maryland, she worked as a nurse for several years before helping develop a geriatric center with the Sisters of Mercy in Detroit. She also helped create programs for elderly patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in Norfolk, Va. She served on the boards of Long Term Care Virginia and the Bon Secours DePaul Hospital Foundation.

Sister Peggy also served on many congregation committees and chaired the Provincial General Assembly in 1984, 1992 and 1995. She was also the liaison sister with the Baltimore Associates and worked with the associates and the formation team before retiring in 2011.

“Sister Peggy’s work with those who were poor and elderly made a difference in the lives of so many people,” said Sister Elaine Davia, area leader for the Sisters of Bon Secours, USA. “We will remember her for her commitment to her patients and her love for the field of gerontology, but most especially for her gentle care and positive approach to life. She will be missed.”

The Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on April 19 and there will be a sharing of memories at 10:15 a.m. prior to Mass.
