Sister Barbara Mary died June 22. She was 86. Born in Pittsburgh as Helen Slaney, Sister Barbara Mary professed her first vows as a School Sister July 30, 1955. Sister Barbara Mary spent her early years of religious life as a teacher at St. Matthew School, Northwood. She was also a principal of St. Mary’s School in Hagerstown in the 1970s. Later in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Sister Barbara Mary was employed in a variety of administrative tasks at Villa Assumpta, such as coordinating records and handling purchasing for Maria Health Care Center. She was also a volunteer with the Office of Development. Elsewhere, Sister Barbara Mary served in Pennsylvania and Mississippi. She held a bachelor’s degree from what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University and a master’s degree from what is now Loyola University Maryland, both in Baltimore.
