University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson was named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for 2023, according to research released by Healthgrades.

The recognition puts UM St. Joseph Medical Center in the top 2 percent of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance across the most common conditions and procedures. This is the fourth consecutive year (2020-2023) UM St. Joseph Medical Center is among America’s Best.

In a news release, Dr. Thomas B. Smyth, UM St. Joseph Medical Center president and CEO, said the hospital is “exceptionally proud to be recognized as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades, which is a testament to our unwavering focus on patient safety.”

The repeated designation from Healthgrades “demonstrates to our patients and our community that we are committed to providing loving service and compassionate, high-quality care to all those we serve,” he said.

Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country to identify the top-performing hospitals.

Patients treated at one of the 2023 America’s 100 Best Hospitals have, on average, a 25.5 percent lower risk of mortality than if they were treated at a hospital that did not receive the America’s 100 Best Hospitals award, according to Healthgrades statistics.

Other Maryland hospitals that ranked among the top 100 included Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center and Frederick Health Hospital.
