Sister Elizabeth Mary Novak dies at 88 November 5, 2024By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Feature, Local News, News, Obituaries An 11 a.m. funeral mass for Franciscan Sister Elizabeth Mary Novak will be offered Nov. 6 at Assisi House in Aston, Pa. Sister Elizabeth died Nov. 3. She was 88 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 66 years. Sister Elizabeth Mary was born Patricia Catherine Novak in Baltimore, where she was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus in Highlandtown and a graduate of The Catholic High School of Baltimore. She entered the congregation in 1956 and professed her first vows in 1958. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from what is now Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg. Sister Elizabeth Mary ministered for 46 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, where she taught for seven years at Shrine of the Little Flower School in Baltimore; one year at the lower school of the Queen of Peace Cluster School in Baltimore; seven years at St. Elizabeth School in Baltimore; and 31 years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Essex. She received several awards, including being named Teacher of the Year from the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1988. Sister Elizabeth Mary also taught in Delaware and Washington, D.C.
