Archbishop Rozanski, Baltimore native, honored for ‘great preaching’ November 11, 2023By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Feature, Local News, News The Aquinas Institute of Theology has named St. Louis Archbishop Mitchell T. Rozanski, a Baltimore native and former auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, as one of two recipients of its 29th Annual Great Preacher Award. Dominican Father Paul Whittington of St. Katharine Drexel in Chicago was the other honoree. The Aquinas Institute of Theology honors preachers who proclaim, in word and deed, the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the coming and presence of the reign of God. The Great Preacher Award was presented Nov. 9 at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac. Archbishop Rozanski was born in 1958 and grew up in the parishes of Holy Rosary in Fells Point and Sacred Heart of Mary in Graceland Park. He graduated from Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Essex in 1976, where he had been president of the student government. After his priestly ordination in 1984 by Archbishop William D. Borders at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland, Archbishop Rozanski served as a parish priest at St. Anthony in Baltimore, St. Isaac Jogues in Carney, Holy Cross and St. Mary Star of the Sea in Baltimore, Immaculate Conception in Towson and St. John the Evangelist in Severna Park. Pope John Paul II named him an auxiliary bishop of Baltimore in 2004 – the youngest American bishop of that time. Pope Francis named him bishop of the Diocese of Springfield, Mass., in 2014 and archbishop of St. Louis in 2020. The Great Preacher Award was established in 1995.
