Archdiocese of Baltimore set to welcome 13 permanent deacons

Archbishop William E. Lori will ordain 13 men to the permanent diaconate for the Archdiocese of Baltimore May 22 during a rite at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the 10 a.m. Mass is by invitation only; a livestream will be available at archbalt.org. Brief biographical sketches of the men, using information supplied by the archdiocese, follow:

William Arther III

Home Parish: Holy Family, Randallstown

Family: Wife, Mary; three children; Daniel, Megan and Matthew (deceased); one grandchild

Internships:: Apostleship of the Sea; Sacred Heart, Glyndon

Did You Know? A logistics program manager for Northrop Grumman, Arther spent 30 years in the U.S. Army Rserve, including two deployments to Iraq. He came into full communion with the church in 1999.

Daniel Cajigas

Home Parish: St. Francis de Sales, Abingdon

Family: Wife, Liz; two children: Viviana and Lisandra

Internships: University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center; St. Margaret, Bel Air

Did You Know? Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Cajigas spent 25 years as a public health officer in the U.S. Air Force and Navy. He is the business manager at St. Francis de Sales.

Thomas Higgins Jr.

Home Parish: St. Paul, Ellicott City

Family: Wife, Jane; one child: Elizabeth Dernoga

Internships: Maryland Correctional Institution, Jessup; pastorate of Resurrection of Our Lord, Laurel, and St. Lawrence Martyr, Hanover

Did You Know? A commercial banker, Higgins’ career has included working with nonprofit organizations.

Roch Kallmyer

Home Parish: Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Ellicott City

Family: Wife, Linda; four children: Emily, Madeline, Abigail and Daniel

Internships: University of Maryland Medical Center; pastorate of St. Louis, Clarksville, and St. Francis of Assisi, Fulton

Did You Know? An electrical engineer, Kallmyer works in technical sales. His parish internship included assisting Bishop Adam J. Parker at two confirmation Masses.

Howard Klohr

Home Parish: Christ the King, Glen Burnie

Family: Wife, Sandra; three children: Brandi Brown, Heather Klohr and Alexandria Kennell; three grandchildren

Internships: University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center; Our Lady of the Chesapeake, Lake Shore

Did You Know? Klohr has had a career as a  software engineer.

Michael Lewandowski

Home Parish: St. John the Evangelist, Frederick

Family: Wife, Laura; two children: Evelyn Cahall and Robert

Internships: Frederick Rescue Mission; St. Katharine Drexel, Frederick

Did You Know? Lewandowski has experience in the federal government, where he has served as an archivist and records manager.

Daniel Miller

Home Parish: St. Francis of Assisi, Mayfield

Family: Wife, Maggie; three children: Rose, Betty and Evelyn

Internships: Stella Maris Hospice, Timonium; St. Bernadette, Severn

Did You Know? Miller is the pastoral associate of St. Bernadette Parish in Severn and also teaches middle school religion.

Karl Noah

Home Parish: St. Joseph-on-Carrollton Manor, Buckeystown

Family: Wife, Kathleen; four children: Cameron, Shannon, Sean and Colleen

Internships: Frederick Rescue Mission; St. Ignatius of Loyola, Ijamsville

Did You Know? An electrical engineer, Noah said, “I am not the same person who started this journey four years ago.”

Mark Rachid

Home Parish: St. Philip Neri, Linthicum Heights

Family: Wife, Carmen; four children: Jessica Hickerson, Andrew, David and Suzanne; five grandchildren

Internships: St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore; Our Lady of the Fields, Millersville

Did You Know? Rachid serves as the office manager for the pastorate of St. Philip Neri and St. Clement I, Lansdowne.

James Rose

Home Parish: Our Lady of the Mountains, Cumberland

Family: Wife, Gretchan; three children: Abigale, Hannah and Theodore

Internships: North Branch Correctional Institution, Cumberland; Divine Mercy Parish, Western Maryland

Did You Know? Rose is an aging care manager with the Huntington-Bedford-Fulton (Pa.) Area Agency on Aging. His discrenment included  commutes to St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore.

John Schmidt Jr.

Home Parish: St. Ignatius, Ijamsville

Family: Wife, Michele; four children: Emily, Connor, Nicholas and Mary

Internships: UMBC Campus Ministry; St. Timothy, Walkersville

Did You Know? Schmidt is a clinical psychologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda and an associate professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Joseph Slattery

Home Parish: St. Peter the Apostle, Libertytown

Family: Wife, Sherri; six children: Joseph, Sean, Ryan, Michael, Meaghan and Monica; four grandchildren

Internships: Frederick Rescue Mission; St. Joseph, Sykesville

Did You Know? Slattery works in global cloud sales for IBM. His childhood influences included a Salesian summer camp.

Michael Tiné

Home Parish: Our Lady of the Fields, Millersville

Family: Wife, Christina; four children: Ava, Joseph, Ellie and Greta

Internships: Johns Hopkins Hospital; Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Baltimore

Did You Know? An electrical engineer at Hardesty Hanover in Annapolis, Tiné grew up on Long Island and remains a fan of the New York Mets.
