Jesuit Father Eugene A. Nolan, former Loyola Blakefield headmaster, dies at 84 January 12, 2025By Catholic Review Staff Catholic Review Filed Under: Feature, Local News, News, Obituaries, Schools Jesuit Father Eugene A. Nolan, who served as headmaster at Loyola Blakefield in Towson and associate chaplain at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore, died Jan. 6 at the Scranton Jesuit Community. He was 84. He was headmaster at Loyola Blakefield from 1980 to 1986. He also ministered at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Fells Point and St. Ignatius Academy in Baltimore during his time in Baltimore. A funeral Mass was offered Jan. 11 at Madonna Della Strada Chapel at the University of Scranton. A Scranton, Pa., native and a graduate of Scranton Central High School, Father Nolan entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, Pa., July 30, 1960. Shortly after pronouncing his first vows as a Jesuit, he began his studies at what was then Loyola College and the Seminary of Fordham University in Shrub Oak, N.Y. After earning degrees in philosophy and English, he continued his studies in theology at Woodstock College (first in Maryland and then in New York), earning a master’s degree in 1971. He was ordained a priest June 5, 1971, by Cardinal Lawrence Shehan of Baltimore. He also spent time on the faculties at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda; Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.; and Scranton Preparatory School.
