Born and raised in Washington, D.C., she entered religious life in 1952 at the Sisters of Mercy’s novitiate in Mount Washington. She professed her final vows in 1957.

Sister Mary Ellen earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Mount St. Agnes College in Baltimore and a master’s degree in education from what is now Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. She taught at St. Peter’s Elementary School in Baltimore and was a teacher of 33 years at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Baynesville.
