Sister Mary Ellen Schwartz, D.C., dies at 88

A funeral Mass for Daughter of Charity Sister Mary Ellen Schwartz was offered Jan. 29 in the Villa St. Michael Chapel in Emmitsburg. Sister Mary Ellen died Jan. 25. She was 88.

Born in Baltimore, Sister Mary Ellen graduated from Seton High School in Baltimore in 1951 and in 1955, received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore. She entered the Daughters of Charity from her parish of St. Charles Borromeo in Pikesville in 1956.  

In the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Sister Mary Ellen ministered from 2001 to 2014 at Emmitsburg’s St. Joseph Provincial House, later St. Joseph House, and served in special projects and hospitality. In 2014, she was missioned to Villa St. Michael for prayer ministry, which she continued until her death.

Sister Mary Ellen also taught in Washington, D.C.; Bladensburg and Virginia.
